I'm entering a competivie interaction for light between Macrocystis and Pterygophora and ran into an issue of semantics regarding the type of competition.

There are two forms of competition in this database and I am not sure if they are comprehensive. The pull down tab shows:

space - indirect competition through the removal of space
interference - direct aggression between individuals

I am confused by the definition of space because I was under the impression that there were no indirect interactions occuring in this web. Ideally 'space' may need to be changed to "Exploitative" to avoid this confusion. Are their any suggestions as to what type I should enter it as if this change is not possible?

Hi Nick, Great question.  And you're right, twice:  a) this does come down to semantics in many ways, and b) only direct interaction should be entered.  The only exception to the latter is.....you guessed it....competition for "space".    Think about competition for "space" in both 2D and 3D.  That is, it could be crowding out a competitor by occupying bedrock on which both species grow (2D), overgrowing another species and smothering it (2D), or growing above it and therefore shading it from needed light (3D).

We'll have to do a better job of describing the various interaction types in the manual!  Check back in a week or two and tell us how we did please!

Oh, and just to be clear:  for Macro and Pterygophora, I would have put space competition.  And remember that entered interactions are not automatically recipricol.  That is, if you enter Macro as node 1 and Ptery as node 2 for competition, you (may) also need to enter Ptery as node 1 and Macro as node 2 if the citation your are referencing supports that.
